Probably the best guitar player story ever. In Tom's own words....

"In the beginning I played the drums! I had a drum set with a picture of the Bee Gee's on the bass drum. There was an older kid down the street who played and taught me a few things and the first thing I learned was that a drumset with the Bee Gee's on it was not very cool! My drumming career took a turn for the worse after I used my brothers Neil Diamond records as cymbals. (sorry Greg) . The next morning I found my brother had taken a can opener around each drum head and opened them up like coffee cans! That was the end of the Bee Gees drumset! My brother had been taking group guitar lessons at school and when he wasn't around I would play his guitar. After someone stepped on the guitar It seemed our futures in music were over. I was determined to learn how to play even without a working guitar! I still had my brothers Mel Bay guitar chord book so ! took an old plastic watercoler paint set from grade school and drew the guitar fretboard on it with a magic marker and then put 6 rubber bands around it like guitar strings and learned all my chords on that! I practiced on my homemade guitar neck all summer until my parents rented a guitar and got a month of guitar lessons! I plugged my guitar directly into our stereo until it blew up. When my grandpa found out I had no amp to play through he gave me his own accordion amp which I played through for many years and still have today."
